What to Expect

  • The procession starts at 14:30 on the Dijver and winds through the historic city centre for about 3 hours.
  • More than 1,800 participants in stunning medieval and biblical costumes bring ancient stories to life — from the Old Testament to the arrival of the relic of the Holy Blood in Bruges.
  • The route passes many iconic locations, including the Markt, ’t Zand, Steenstraat, and the Burg.

It’s a unique mix of theatre, history, music, and faith — a truly unforgettable spectacle right on your doorstep.

Practical Information for Your Stay

  • Best viewing spots are along the route (free to stand anywhere). Paid seating is available on benches and grandstands if you prefer a reserved place.

The History of Bruges’ Procession of the Holy Blood

The Procession of the Holy Blood is one of Bruges’ oldest and most treasured traditions. Held every year on Ascension Day, it has been part of the city’s living heritage since 1304 and was recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009.

According to legend, Count Thierry of Alsace brought a relic containing a drop of Christ’s Holy Blood back from the Second Crusade in 1149. The relic was housed in the Holy Blood Basilica on the Burg, where it quickly became a powerful symbol of faith and protection for the city.

What began as a thanksgiving procession after turbulent times has evolved into a spectacular historical and religious pageant. More than 1,800 locals participate each year, dressed in magnificent medieval and biblical costumes. The procession brings to life stories from the Old and New Testament, the arrival of the relic in Bruges, and culminates with the sacred relic itself being carried through the historic streets.

Surviving wars, revolutions, and bans, the procession remains a vibrant expression of Bruges’ rich history and deep-rooted identity — a true living masterpiece right in the heart of the city.
